Apollo 11 - "We are Go for Launch"

On the 16th of July, 1969, American astronauts Neil Armstrong, Edwin ("Buzz") Aldrin and Michael Collins were launched into space.  Their mission - known as Apollo 11 - was to land on the Moon and safely return to Earth.

Their launch vehicle - the Saturn V rocket, powered in its first stage by five huge F-1 engines - generated about 7.6 million pounds of thrust (lifting a vehicle weighing about 6.5 million pounds). 

The Saturn V remains the most powerful machine ever built and is the only vehicle which has carried a human being beyond Earth's gravity.
