Army P-51 Planes on Iwo Jima

The Allies' objective, in fighting the Battle of Iwo Jima, was to secure a base not far from Tokyo from which to launch air attacks on the Japanese home islands.

After a long, grueling and deadly battle, the U.S. achieved that objective.  These P-51 aircraft, in position at Iwo Jima, were used in the final stages of the War in the Pacific.
