Babri Mosque - Crowd Commences Destruction

Hindu activists destroyed the Babri Masjid, a 16th-century mosque, on the 6th of December, 1992.  A crowd, estimated to be 150,000-strong, broke through police lines and demolished the mosque - situated on a disputed site in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh - with pick axes, shovels and similar hand-held equipment.

The uprising sparked religious riots throughout India, causing the deaths of about 2,000 people.
