Battle of the Atlantic - British and German Newsreels

By the time the war in Europe ended, in May of 1945, German U-boats had sent approximately 3,500 merchant vessels to the bottom of the sea - 2,452 in the North Atlantic.  Tens of thousands of Allied sailors and soldiers also went down, as did about three-quarters of all German U-boat sailors.

In his memoirs, Winston Churchill wrote: “The only thing that ever really frightened me during the war was the U-boat peril.”  (Churchill, The Second World War, Volume II, page 259.)

This video is a compilation of British and German historical footage depicting the Battle of the Atlantic.
