Berlin - The Red Army Captures the CityAs German defenders continue their now-hopeless efforts, Soviet troops are nearly at Hitler's bunker. Eva Braun takes a cyanide capsule, and Hitler shoots himself. Red-Army soldiers reach their main target - the Reichstag - and a Soviet flag is raised at its top. (Days later, the flag-raising will be reenacted for the cameras.) Within a week, Germany surrenders and the war in Europe is over. Hitler's efforts to install a Thousand-Year Reich have been totally crushed by allied forces.
