Map Depicting Crash Site of XF-11Knowing his XF-11 was about to crash, Howard Hughes attempted to reach the LA Country Club. This map, depicting the location of the crash site, shows that he nearly made it. Instead, the plane went down in a nearby neighborhood. Hughes had a policy that he would be the first person to fly his newly designed planes. He explained why: "If I have made a mistake in the design, then I'm the one who should pay for it, and I certainly would not ask somebody else to fly the plane if I were afraid to do it myself." |
