Black Box - Orbiter Experiment Support Systems

Columbia's Recorder.

An airplane data recorder is referred to as a "black box."  Shuttle recorders - typically activated just before the orbiter begins its descent through the atmosphere - are called orbiter experiment support systems

Columbia's recorder was found, in a previously searched area, about six weeks after the disaster.
