Confederate Attack on Ft. Sumter - April 13, 1861

On the 10th of April, 1861, Brigadier General Beauregard (on behalf of the Confederate States of America) demanded that the Union garrison surrender its position at Fort Sumter (in Charleston's harbor).  Major Anderson, the Union commander, refused. 

This drawing, published by Harper's Weekly on the 27th of April, 1861, depicts the Confederate bombardment on the 13th of April, 1861 - the day the Union troops surrendered.
