Esa-Pekka Salonen - Sibelius No. 2, Andante Ending

Before he became conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Esa-Pekka Salonen directed this interpretation of Jean Sibelius' Symphony No. 2.  From Finland, Salonen is conducting a work by one of Finland's greatest composers and becomes very emotional in this section.

Years later, while Salonen was conducting the Sibelius cycle in LA, he commented on this earlier performance.  This movement of the 2nd, he said, creates a special emotional connection when he is away from Finland.  It is, in other words, evidence of the nostalgia one feels for home.

This clip - the haunting ending of the Andante -  is performed by the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra.  Their concert took place in November, 1992, at Berwaldhallen in Stockholm, Sweden.

This is part 3 of 3.
