Execution, by Hanging, of John Andre

John Andre, captured at Tarrytown, was hanged at Tappan, New York on the 2nd of October, 1780.  Witnesses reported that he refused a blindfold and positioned the noose around his own neck.

Andre's body was buried under the gallows where he died, but in 1821 the Duke of York requested that his remains be returned to Britain.  They were reinterred, under a marble monument, at Hero's Corner in Westminster Abbey.  

The night before he died, Andre created a pen-and-ink drawing of himself.  It is now owned by Yale College.
