General Henry Clinton - Commander, British Forces

In 1778, Henry Clinton (1730-1838) took over as commander of Britain’s forces in America.  He forced the surrender of Charleston, South Carolina - one of the lowest points in the war for the Americans - in April of 1780.

Historians give a mixed review of Clinton’s efforts since he was known for both intelligent planning and not-always-good execution.  In the spring of 1782, he passed his commander-in-chief duties to Sir Guy Carleton.

The papers of Sir Henry Clinton (which include spy letters) are maintained at the Clements Library, University of Michigan.
