Goree Warehouses in Liverpool

As Liverpool grew during the eighteenth century, the city needed more storage space.  Merchants, growing wealthy from the slave trade, built warehouses which they named Goree (after Senegal's Goree Island, on the African coast near the harbor at Dakar). 

The buildings were burned in 1802 but were rebuilt in 1811.  Trade with Africa continued even after Parliament abolished slavery.
