Gythium (Gythion) - Port of Ancient SpartaGythion (also spelled Gytheio, Gythiam or Gythium) was (and is) the port of ancient (and modern) Sparta. Located about thirty miles (forty km) away, where the mouth of the Gythius River meanders (in a similar direction) from the northwestern section of the Laconian Gulf, the ancient town was damaged by an earthquake.
