Hangtown Gold Camp

Placerville (Hangtown) gold camp, in the 1860s.

Sutter’s Mill (in Coloma, California) was about ten miles from Placerville (named for the placer deposits found in a nearby river bed).

As thousands of gold-rush seekers flocked to Northern California, Placerville became an important supply source for the mining camps.
