I, Claudius - by Robert Graves

Robert Graves wrote this book about the Roman emperor, Claudius, but many historians think his work about World War I - Good-bye to All That - is even more significant.  In unsparing words, he describes the Western Front as "the sausage machine" because:

... it was fed with live men, churned out corpses, and remained firmly screwed in place.
