Ipatiev House - Scene of Romanov Execution

Tsar Nicholas II and his entire family were executed late in the evening of July 16, 1918 at the Ipatiev House.  The home (which the Bolsheviks called "The House of Special Purpose") was located at 49, Ascension Avenue (Voznesenky Prospekt) in Ekaterinburg, a small town in the Ural Mountains named for Catherine II.

This film, made in 1918 and available at the Library of Congress, preserves its appearance at the time.  The camera initially focuses on the south facade, then pans to the east facade.  The executions took place in the cellar, noted by the middle arch on the south side.

The house was demolished in July of 1978, because too many pilgrims were visiting the site.  After the fall of the Soviet Union, a new church - called the "Cathedral on the Blood" - was built on the spot.
