Joan of Arc - Battle Losses

After her stunning victories at Orleans, and other places, Joan of Arc wanted to continue fighting against the English.  Her goal was to rid France of all foreign control.

The king, Charles VII, disagreed with Joan's approach.  His negotiations, and resulting treaties, caused delays and, by the time Joan and her men reached France's largest city, the English had refortified their positions.

Although it initially seemed that Joan of Arc's instincts were always right, she was wrong (for whatever reason) about reclaiming Paris.  Her efforts there led to disastrous results.

In this scene, from a 1999 made-for-television mini-series (which is not always historically accurate), Joan (against the advice of Captain La Hire) attacks English-controlled Paris.  La Hire tells Joan:

At Agincourt, I lost my faith in my country.  I came to believe in myself.  At Orleans, I lost my faith in myself, and I came to believe in you.  We are now both utterly alone.  Only I have the courage to admit it.

Joan's goal of uniting France would not occur under her command.
