Lusitania - Winsor McCay Animation, 1918

This 1918 animation, by the famous cartoonist Winsor McCay (1867-1934), depicts the 1915 sinking of the Lusitania, a ship of the Cunard Line.

The ship sank (in eighteen minutes) after a second, massive explosion.  It was believed, at the time, there had been a second torpedo, and that is reflected in this animation.  The U-boat captain, however, denied it.

Later discovery of the wreck, by Dr. Robert Ballard, revealed that coal dust may have been responsible for the second, fatal explosion.
