Pella - Map of Classical GreecePella, a town on the shore of Lake Loudias, became the capital of Macedonia near the beginning of the 4th century BC. Although it thrived under Philip II and his son, Alexander III (also called "the Great"), Pella gradually lost its access to the sea due to silting of its nearby rivers (the Axios, Haliakmon and Loudias).
