March to the Sea - Burning Southern RailroadsTo hinder the South's ability to continue fighting, Union troops burned not just rail stations but also rail lines. This drawing, by A.W. Warren, illustrates federal forces destroying (and burning) rails and ties on the Weldon Rail Line (north of Jarret's Station) on the 8th of December, 1864. The successful raid, led by Union General Warren, damaged General Lee's ability to move much-needed supplies to his men. Click on the image for an expanded view.
