Meningitis - Its Symptoms

Meningitis occurs when the meninges (the membrane lining of the brain and spinal cord) become inflamed.  The disease can be caused by bacteria or a virus.  Sometimes, it results in death.

Some physicians believe that Helen Keller contracted meningitis when she was a nineteen-month-old baby, causing her to become deaf and blind.   Other doctors think she had scarlet fever.
