Michelangelo - The Last JudgmentMichelangelo did not want to paint this fresco on the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel and did the work many years after completing the ceiling. After it was finished, some individuals were highly critical because so many figures (depicted in hell) are minus their clothes. When the pope's master-of-ceremonies (Biagio da Cesena) complained, the pontiff reportedly said that his jurisdiction did not extend to hell ... so ... the painting would have to remain. Some of the body parts were ultimately painted-over, however, after Michelangelo's death. That job fell to Daniele da Volterra (1509 - 1566) who was called Il Braghettone (the breeches maker).
