Michelangelo loved the marble from the quarries at Carrara. But how did he extract great blocks of marble for his sculptures, like the famous Pieta?
More than once, Michelangelo nearly lost his life as he and his workers brought quarried marble down the mountain. After it was safely at the bottom, the block he had selected for the Pieta had to be transported, by ship, to Rome. He worked on the sculpture in 1499.
