Retrieval of the Dead - Ajax Carries Achilles

Ajax, depicted in Greek mythology as a strong man, carries the body of his dead friend, Achilles.  IIn this scene (Side 1 from an Attic black-figure amphora, circa 520-510 BC), he is protected by the god Hermes (on the left) and the goddess Athena (on the right).

The artifact is now maintained at the Louvre - Department of Greek, Etruscan and Roman Antiquities, Sully, first floor, room 42, case 11.
