Robert E. Lee - Confederate GeneralAccording to the The National Park Service tells us that: Lee utilized the defensive advantage of trench warfare and the ability to move his troops quickly from point-to-point along his lines, to hold Petersburg and Richmond for nine and a-half months in spite of the ever increasing odds against his army. With the Union victory at Five Forks, April 1, 1865, Lee's lines broke the next day. Seven days later he surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to Gen. U. S. Grant at Appomattox Court House, Virginia.
