Roman Forum - City of Ruins

The Roman Forum was the gathering place of ancient Rome.  The site itself is located in a valley between the Capitoline and Palatine hills.  Originally a marshy area, it was drained and cleared so it could become the political and social heart of the city.

Over the years, the forum expanded to include law courts, the senate house and temples.  When Rome fell, and the empire ended, the Forum ceased to be important, thereafter falling into ruins.  Today it is a favorite tourist destination.
