Xerxes - Ruins of the Palace Entrance

Xerxes had a palace at Persepolis which was twice as big as his father's.  Much of the palace is in ruins.  Historians believe that Alexander the Great and his army may have been responsible for its destruction, given that Xerxes had sacked Athens following his victory at Thermopylae.

This photo depicts the entrance to Xerxes' palace.  The relief demonstrates how the Great King was attended by people carrying a parasol and a fan.
