Saipan's High CliffsNot only did Japanese commanders on Saipan - in July of 1944 - order their troops to attack, in a "banzai charge," they also ordered them to not surrender. The island has high cliffs which were used by some Japanese soldiers, and Saipan civilians, to end their lives by jumping onto the rocks below.
