The Columbia of 1792

The Columbia (which was later referred to as Columbia Rediviva [Latin for "revived"] was a privately owned ship.  It was built, in 1773, by James Briggs at Hobart’s Landing in Norwell, Massachusetts.

Under the command of Captain Robert Gray, the Columbia sailed to the Pacific Northwest where it was used in the fur trade.

In 1790, she circumnavigated the globe - the first American ship to do so.

Captain Gray discovered the Columbia River, in 1792, and named it after his ship.

The vessel was decommissioned, then salvaged, in 1806.
