William Barret Travis Photo

William Barret Travis was a lawyer born in Conecuh County (Alabama) on the 9th of August, 1809.  He was admitted to the bar and practiced law in Claiborne, Alabama.

In about 1832, Travis went to Texas.  He joined the Texas army and fought for that territory's independence.

In February and early March, 1836, he commanded army regulars (together with Jim Bowie who commanded volunteers) in their joint effort to defend the Alamo against besieging Mexicans (commanded by General Santa Anna).

Greatly outnumbered, Travis sent an urgent dispatch on the 24th of February, requesting immediate help and reinforcements.  The help and reinforcements never came.

All the men, defending the Alamo, were killed including Travis and Bowie.

The image, depicted above, is based on an 1835 sketch by Wiley Martin.  It is the only known likeness made during Travis' lifetime, although it should be noted that its accuracy has been debated.
