President McKinley - Assassination
TOO LATE
Guards who quickly jumped Czolgosz nearly beat him to death. According to the Buffalo Courier: McKinley, in a strained voice, cautioned the guards: Word of the shooting quickly spread through the Expo. Buffalo crowds were in a panic. Was the President really injured? When people learned what had happened, and who was involved, there were shouts of "Lynch him!" Thomas Edison’s company filmed the scene of surging crowds at the Temple of Music right after the assassination. (You will need RealAudio to view this 1901 black-and-white movie.) Meanwhile, as the President saw his would-be assassin lying nearby, he said: It was too late for that, however. And it was too late for the President.
