When Rupert Potter was unable to lease his preferred home in Scotland for the summer of 1882, he decided that his family would travel to Britain’s Lake District. Regarded by many as the most picturesque area of England, the Lake District remains unspoiled and is inextricably associated with Beatrix Potter. Thanks to Ann Bowker’s pictures, and Simon Ledingham’s aerial photographs, we can examine why Miss Potter loved living there:

• Mountains, in the Lake District, are called fells.



• On the fells, during winter, we can find a robin and an ice-covered fence.



• The land is green, and lush, looking north to cloud-capped Skiddaw and Swinside and east to Derwentwater from the path up Rowling End.
