Dead Sea Scrolls

Dead Sea Scrolls

In 1947, while looking for a lost goat, young Bedouins found ancient scrolls in the caves of Qumran. Unknown to those young shepherds, they had stumbled upon the oldest known surviving manuscripts of the Hebrew Scriptures.

One thousand years older than any other surviving manuscripts, the Qumran scrolls were a magnificent find. But why were they hidden in desolate caves near the Dead Sea?

In this story about the discovery, virtually visit the Dead Sea - the lowest area on Earth. Inspect the caves of Qumran. Look at some of the scrolls, or their fragments, to which very few credentialed scholars have access. And examine the artifacts which people, from those long-ago days, used in their daily lives.
