1887 Baseball Card - John Clarkson, Boston Beaneaters

One of the earliest baseball cards ever issued, this 1887 image depicts John Clarkson of the Boston Beaneaters.

The card is part of the first-known set of baseball cards—Allen & Ginter's World's Champions (N28)—released in tobacco products.

The image depicted here, which is maintained by the Library of Congress, is part of the Benjamin K. Edwards Collection of Baseball Cards. The Library's curators tell us that the condition of this card (and others of the same era) are very fragile:

Materials in this collection are extremely fragile and cannot be served.
