300 - Savagely Fighting at Thermopylae

300 - Savagely Fighting at Thermopylae Visual Arts Famous Historical Events Ancient Places and/or Civilizations Film Social Studies World History

Image of an illustration depicting the Spartans pushing Persians off the cliff at Thermopylae. The initial area of fighting, during the famous battle, was a very narrow pass, and Xerxes' Immortals were unfamiliar with the surrounding terrain.

Note that although artists routinely paint huge cliffs separating the land from the sea, on the east side of the battle area at Thermopylae, Herodotus does not describe it that way.
