A Brave Black Regiment - by Luis F. Emilio Biographies African American History Civil Wars American History

A Brave Black Regiment tells the History of the Fifty-Fourth Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry.  Their story became part of today's popular culture when it was featured in the film Glory.

Frederick Douglass recruited more than 100 free blacks - including two of his sons - to fight for the Union, using words like these:

Who would be free themselves must strike the blow ... I urge you to fly to arms and smite to death the power that would bury the Government and your liberty in the same hopeless grave. This is your golden opportunity.

The book, by Luis Fenollosa Emilio, is available for online reading thanks to the publisher and Google Books.
