Abraham Lincoln Funeral in Chicago - Special Catafalque American History Famous Historical Events Nineteenth Century Life American Presidents

In Chicago, officials used a special catafalque at City Hall to hold the President's coffin.  More than 125,000 people waited to view Abraham Lincoln's remains in that city alone.

The President's Chicago funeral took place on May 1, 1865.

Harper's Weekly published this illustration, of the City Hall viewing area, in its May 20, 1865 issue (at page 308).  On that page, we see this caption:
