Aerial View of Altis at Olympia Geography Social Studies Sports Visual Arts Ancient Places and/or Civilizations

This photograph depicts an aerial view of the Altis site at Olympia.

Altis was a very special place in Ancient Greece.

Located in the valley between the rivers Alpheus and Kladeos, the grove of Altis represented holy - therefore, neutral - ground. It was the site of the great sanctuary of Zeus, chief god of the Greeks, whom the ancients believed lived on Mount Olympus.
