Alyscamps Road and Vincent van Gogh

Alyscamps Road and Vincent van Gogh Medieval Times Visual Arts

Vincent van Gogh was living in Arles—in the south of France—during 1888. He visited the area depicted in this photo, which is a lane known as Alyscamps Road. It has ancient burial tombs and sarcophagi along both sides.

As he worked at the site, in the fall of 1888, van Gogh created a pair of paintings—actually two pairs of paintings—of autumnal scenes with people walking along Alyscamps Road. One of those four paintings sold for $66.3 million on May 5, 2015.
