Amistad Captives on Trial

Amistad Captives on Trial African American History Slaves and Slave Owners Trials Visual Arts

After studying with the great muralist Diego Rivera, Woodruff began his work on a series of three panels describing three aspects of the Amistad story:   The mutiny, the trial and the return of the victims to their homeland.

This image depicts Woodruff's oil-on-canvas which imagines how the trial of the Amistad captives may have appeared when it took place in Connecticut.

Now restored, the three-part mural has been exhibited in various U.S. cities.
