An Exact View of the Battle at Charlestown

An Exact View of the Battle at Charlestown

This view of the battle of Bunker Hill was engraved (likely in 1775) by Bernard Romans.

Born in the Netherlands, then raised in England, Romans (1720-1784) likely arrived in America during 1757.  At the time, he was a junior surveyor for the British and became an early cartographer of the southeastern colonies.

He is especially known for his map work of Florida and for this engraving.

Historians are uncertain whether he was present at (or near) the scene of the battle at Charlestown.
