Auction Notice - Slaves Sold by Name Slaves and Slave Owners Social Studies American History African American History Civil Rights Law and Politics Ethics Tragedies and Triumphs

A slave auction, where 23 people were sold, took place on the 8th of March, 1855.  This poster advertised the event.

The poster lists the slaves by name and age:

  • Of the 23 slaves, 6 were young children.  Their ages were 1, 2, 5, 8, 10 and 12
  • Of the 23 slaves, 7 were teenagers.  Their ages were 14, 16, 16, 17, 17, 17 and 18
  • The others ranged in age from 23 to 60.
