Birr Castle

Birr Castle Visual Arts Geography Aviation & Space Exploration

Postcard image of Birr Castle and its telescopes, based on a painting by Henrietta Crompton in 1845.

The telescopes were the brainchild of William Parsons, the 3rd Earl of Rosse, who ordered several large telescopes after he inherited the Earldom from his father, in 1841. His 72-foot telescope was the largest telescope of the 19th century.
