Bombed Cities and Burned-out Areas - Japan American History Famous Historical Events Social Studies Tragedies and Triumphs World War II Geography Disasters

After the Allies secured key Pacific islands, such as Tinian, they had bases from which to send B-29s to Japan's home islands.

Those planes carried incendiary bombs - also known as napalm or fire bombs - which were dropped on key Japanese cities.  As depicted in this map, which includes the location of "burned-out areas," bomb runs caused massive damage to people and property.
