After the Allies secured key Pacific islands, such as Tinian, they had bases from which to send B-29s to Japan's home islands.
Those planes carried incendiary bombs - also known as napalm or fire bombs - which were dropped on key Japanese cities. As depicted in this map, which includes the location of "burned-out areas," bomb runs caused massive damage to people and property.
