C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien - A Talk Between Friends

Two close friends, C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, debate the differences between myths and lies.  Are there differences?  Are myths really lies, or lies really myths?

Both men were writers of fantasy-inspred tales:  Lewis wrote The Chronicles of Narnia; Tolkien wrote The Lord of the Rings.  They each knew something about myths and legends.  They loved the idea of spinning tales.  Tolkien even invented languages for his characters.

When it came to religion, however, Tolkien was convinced that his faith was based on truth, not myths and lies.  Lewis believed that his friend had a faith that was based on fantasy.

In this clip - from "Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings:  A Catholic World View" - we see a recreated debate, on these topics, between Tolkien and Lewis.  As Lewis would later report, this debate was ultimately instrumental in his conversion.

A note on the friends' nicknames for each other ... At the time, it was common for friends to call each other by their last names.  In addition, Lewis was known as "Jack" and Tolkien was known as "Tollers."
