In 1944, when the Dalai Lama was 9 years old, a foreigner from Austria was mountain climbing when he came to the city of Lhasa. His name was Heinrich Harrer.

Men from the modern world were very rare and the kind but curious Tibetan people welcomed him. The monks realized that the Dalai Lama needed to know of the world outside of their country and the man was invited to the palace to tutor the boy.

Heinrich taught the boy about geography, modern science, and English. He was amazed at how fast the boy learned and how he always wanted to learn more. He stayed for seven years and became more than a teacher to the Dalai Lama; he became his friend. It was a friendship that would last the rest of their lives.

In later years he would write that wherever he lived in the years after that, he was always homesick for Tibet. A movie was made that tells the story of the time that Heinrich stayed with the Dalai Lama. It is titled. “ Seven Years in Tibet”.
