Col. Paul W. Tibbets, Jr. was the captain of Enola Gay, a B-29 which dropped an atomic bomb over Hiroshima

Col. Paul W. Tibbets, Jr., was selected to pilot the B-29 which would drop the first atomic bomb on a Japanese city.  In this image, we see Tibbets in his plane, the Enola Gay, just before leaving Tinian Island.

Maintained at the U.S. National Archives, this original document has the following description:

Colonel Paul W. Tibbets, Jr., Pilot of the Enola Gay, the Plane that Dropped the Atomic Bomb on Hiroshima, Waves from His Cockpit before the Takeoff, 6 August 1945.
