Colonel Henry Mucci - Leader of Cabanatuan Raid Biographies Famous Historical Events Film Social Studies World History World War II American History

Col. Henry Mucci was both loved and respected by his men.  After their successful “Great Raid,” freeing the starving Allied prisoners from Japan’s POW camp at Cabanatuan (in the Philippines), Mucci’s Rangers talked about their feelings for their leader.  Hereafter are some of their comments:

  • Mucci was so charismatic you couldn't believe it ... If you ever had to go to war, that's the kind of man you wanted to go with.   Alvie Robbins, PFC
  • We all would have died for him, he was the very best.   Vance Shears, Sergeant
  • We knew he was selling us the blue sky, but we would have followed him anywhere.   Robert Prince, C Company Captain

PBS, via its “American Experience” series, broadcast a documentary on the “Bataan Rescue.”  Col. Mucci and his Rangers are featured in that film.
