Crew Racing in New London, Connecticut

Crew Racing in New London, Connecticut American History Biographies Tragedies and Triumphs Social Studies

This image depicts a scene from a "crew" race, in New London, Connecticut.  Howard Hughes, Sr., and his son, Howard Hughes, Jr., attended such a race during 1920.

Cheering for Harvard, father promised son that he could have whatever he wanted if Harvard won.  After the hoped-for victory, Howard Jr. (whom his Dad called "Sonny") asked for a ride on a seaplane.

That $5 ride - which both Hughes took - changed the youngster's life.  He developed a lifelong passion for aviation.
